3 Myths/Misconceptions of Scoliosis

With the majority of the last two years being dedicated to seeking treatment for my Scoliosis and finding what I should or should not do to avoid further progression, I continue to encounter some mind blowing myths/misconceptions about Scoliosis. Over the course of the next decade, I would like to clear up and start to express my own opinion on these myths/misconceptions in what I believe, would be in the best efforts of all Scoliosis Warriors. Some people living with Scoliosis are going onto live regular lives even though they have Scoliosis with no need to seek treatment, while others are left with no choice but to sacrifice daily activities they used to engage upon due to their type of curve, symptoms or general issues they are currently experiencing in relation to their Scoliosis. Ultimately, at the end of the day, it is very important to stay active as much as possible and always engage in some type of physical activity for overall physical and mental well being.

SIDE NOTE...Some activities that may compress the spine or require you to twist and turn repetitively such as heavy weight lifting, gymnastics or trampolining should not be an activity you engage in all the time (especially if you are currently experiencing rotation issues). Now this does not mean "DO NOT" engage in those activities but it should not be your go to choice of exercise all the time. Engaging in activities that might even allow you to practice good posture to some degree while exercising, includes options such as walking, swimming, cycling, soccer, resistance or strength training and yoga.

My Goal with this SPA Blog post is to have people gain an improved understanding of Scoliosis by going over a few common myths/misconceptions. It would be most beneficial to understand what the condition really means for Scoliosis Warriors of all ages. There are still some people following the “watch-and-wait” approach and not taking into consideration the information they are provided by Scoliosis Specialists or Scoliosis Advocates who have experienced going through several different treatment exercises and therapy routines. Majority of people living with Scoliosis still don’t know that effective treatments for Scoliosis are available for all ages and have the ability to make a huge difference.

Even though I say "Impossible is only deemed Impossible until somebody makes it Possible," it is very difficult to debunk all myths/misconceptions that exist in relation to Scoliosis. However, the following Scoliosis myths/misconceptions below, are the ones I hear about most often that I believe deserve more discussion about.

Myth #1: Scoliosis Is "ALWAYS" Painful:

For some people living with Scoliosis, pain is a symptom they never experience (such as myself). To date, I have experienced barely any pain in relation to my Scoliosis. Pain is a greater factor into adulthood once you stop growing, as the spine naturally compresses overtime due to daily tasks, poor posture, wear and tear and not receiving effective treatment for your pain or Scoliosis in general.

It is still possible to experience pain at a younger age, however, most likely when your curve is at or approaching a severe level. However, Scoliosis is "NOT" always painful. Depending on your type of curve, body rotation and specified cobb angle of your Scoliosis, pain will always differ for everyone, depending on those key factors.

Myth #2: Scoliosis Curves Will "NOT" Progress In Adulthood:

Once again, depending on your type of curve, body rotation and cobb angle of your Scoliosis, there still is a chance your Scoliosis could progress in adulthood.

If your cobb angle is at or approaching a severe level, your curve does have the potential to progress up to a degree every couple years if "NO" treatment is done to prevent further progression. It is known that some doctors or orthopedic surgeons will tell Scoliosis patients that they don't need to worry about further progression in adulthood...that is simply "NOT" true, especially if you are at or approaching a severe level. My recommendation would be to take the initiative and responsibility for your Scoliosis to prevent a problem from becoming a bigger problem in the first place, let alone years later as you get older.

Scoliosis patients living with mild Scoliosis and experience no symptoms in relation to their Scoliosis are at a very slim to no risk at further progression. However, receiving treatment to prevent the slightest chance of further progression or any related back/spine issues down the road would only benefit you long term.

Myth #3": Chiropractic Treatment Does "NOT" Work:

Based off my experience having been working with a chiropractor since May 2021, this is completely false. Chiropractic Treatment can do wonders, especially if you are committed to taking care of your Scoliosis long term. Engaging in Chiropractic Treatment will have the potential of leading to positive results such as improvement in overall physical and mental well being, relieving pain, improving joint function, relieving headaches or migraines, improving circulation and has also shown to even help treat arthritis

Again, long term Chiropractic Treatment is the key to eventually seeing results and if you are committed to taking care of yourself over the course of your lifetime, you will have a very high chance of seeing the results you are looking to achieve.

For anyone looking into seeking Chiropractic Treatment, I highly recommended Leaside Family Chiropractic & Scoliosis Center. My experiences attending Leaside have been nothing short of Life Changing. They provide great service, treatment and have great knowledge in the field of Scoliosis.
