Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine. There is a natural forward and backward bend to the spine, however, Scoliosis is when a sideways curvature develops causing the body to move out of normal alignment. There are two types of Scoliosis curves, a C curve and a S curve. The C curve represents one prominent curve, while the S curve represents a double curve with either both being equal curves or still one more prominent then the other.
I made the decision to start The SPA Forum earlier this year to help promote awareness of Scoliosis, debunk myths/misconceptions, discuss some of my life changing experiences living with Scoliosis, as well as what therapy products, Scoliosis related exercises and therapy routines I use and continue to perform on a regular basis that have positively impacted my recovery along my Scoliosis Journey.
This SPA Blog post will include a brief Introduction to What Scoliosis is and Why I have made the decision to start my own blog known as The SPA Forum. This post will also include some discussion on a few topics and areas that I will cover over time about Scoliosis to continue promoting awareness and express my opinion on certain news related to Scoliosis based off my life experiences living with Scoliosis.
Scoliosis has 3 Stages of Detection:
The first stage being Mild Scoliosis. Mild Scoliosis is diagnosed when your Scoliosis curve is between 10 - 24 degrees. Majority of Mild Scoliosis cases are typically not known to cause any major problems, however, if you are young and still growing, it would be beneficial to seek chiropractic treatment or a 2nd opinion on whether your curve may be at risk of further progression.
The second stage is Moderate Scoliosis. Moderate Scoliosis is diagnosed when your Scoliosis curve is between 25 - 39 degrees. A Scoliosis curve in this degree range (especially while growing) is at risk of further progression. I believe it is necessary to seek therapy and treatment for your Scoliosis if your curve is in this degree range based off my experience living with Moderate Scoliosis.
The third stage is Severe Scoliosis. Severe Scoliosis is diagnosed when your Scoliosis curve is 40+ degrees. To avoid long term problems with your Scoliosis, it is essential you seek therapy and treatment for your Scoliosis curve. Scoliosis is known to progress during the growing stages between the ages of 10 to 18 years old. Severe Scoliosis can lead to you experiencing more symptoms then the average Scoliosis patient, however, it really depends on the type of curve you have and whether you are experiencing postural imbalances or sideways rotation.
Throughout all of my life changing experiences living with Scoliosis, sideways rotation was one of the main reasons why I believe I started developing so many symptoms in relation to my Scoliosis, especially my breathing restriction. A breathing restriction is a very rare symptom not to many people living with Scoliosis worldwide usually ever have to experience.
What I have learned is the best therapy to avoiding problems with your Scoliosis is staying active, seeking chiropractic treatment and monitoring your Scoliosis over time to avoid further progression. Preventing further progression is the ultimate goal as you get older. Based off my experiences engaging in chiropractic treatment, wearing a brace and performing Scoliosis related exercises on a daily basis, you may not only have the potential to halt progression of your Scoliosis curve but maybe even drop your Scoliosis curve a few degrees if you are consistent with your therapy and monitor your healthy well being on a daily basis.
The SPA Forum will consist of bi-weekly posts with insightful information about Scoliosis, new findings in the field of Scoliosis, debunking any myths/misconceptions and different therapy products, exercises and routines that have helped me cure or drop majority of my symptoms in relation to Scoliosis to a mild or non existent level.
