The Basics of Scoliosis Explained

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine. The spine has a natural forward and backward curve, however, Scoliosis is when the spine starts to curve to the left or right causing sideways rotation to develop.

There are two kinds of Scoliosis curves, a C curve, which represents one single prominent curve and a S curve, which may represent a double curve with either both equal curves or still potentially one more prominent then the other.

Two additional spinal deformities include Kyphosis and Lordosis. Kyphosis is an abnormally excessive convex curvature of the spine as it occurs in the thoracic and sacral regions. Lordosis is an abnormal inward concave curving of the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine.

Stages of Scoliosis Detection:

     Stage 1) Mild Scoliosis: 10 - 24 Degrees
     Stage 2) Moderate Scoliosis: 25 - 39 Degrees
Stage 3) Severe Scoliosis: 40+ Degrees
